Hi! My name is Iain and I am a final year PhD student who wants to share my passion for science. My PhD and other studies have developed a deep knowledge of biology and a good knowledge of other sciences.
I am enthusiastic about communicating these subject to others, which I have done previously through tutoring at both GCSE and A level for Holland Park Tutoring and through supervising undergraduate students in the lab at Cambridge. Over the past four years, I have been investigating mechanisms of oil production in algae at the University of Cambridge and prior to that, carried out my undergraduate degree in biology with management at Imperial College London.
My research and studies have exposed me to advanced and applied topics that inform my scientific understanding and enable me to frame the subject for my tutees and guide them up to degree level, highlighting the relevance and importance of topics and how they interconnect.
My teaching philosophy involves engaging students by demonstrating the interest and relevance of their topic and connecting to them as an individual. I also find that developing a solid conceptual basis of topics makes the learning process much more efficient and enjoyable. Finally, the gained knowledge must be tested, reinforced and connected to other areas through practise.
I vary my approach based on students’ needs. Here, I outline a typical approach to a longer term tutee. Within a lesson I will first provide feedback on any work that I have marked. I will then teach new concepts and information required for the lesson and subsequently allow the student to use the introduced material, either through discussion, questioning or having them explain the topic. This enables holes in understanding or knowledge to be identified and rectified.
In most situations I will provide an assignment to carry out between tutorials, which will enable students to consolidate their learning. I can also provide less structured classes that are focused more on discussion to build understanding of concepts.
We only take tutor applications from candidates who are studying at the UK’s leading universities. Candidates who fulfil our grade criteria then pass to the interview stage, where a member of the TiC team will personally assess them for subject knowledge, communication skills and general tutoring approach. About 1 in 10 becomes a tutor on our site.
