I am a medical student in York and I have always had a great passion for maths and science, especially chemistry and biology.
For me, maths has always been the easiest to understand because you learn a formula and then apply it and I would love to help others understand it the way I do. Science is just incredible interesting in my eyes, although I appreciate that not everyone thinks so. I hope to show the students how these subjects can be made interesting and hopefully help them to enjoy what they are learning as well! I have never liked exams, but I find that with science and maths it is down to practising the questions and knowing what to say.
I have struggled in the past and my teachers helped me a lot; I would like to do the same for other students. At university, I am part of many music societies as a break from medicine as it can be quite stressful and having an outlet is essential! I also play hockey with my friends which I love as well.
I would like my sessions to be guided by the students. The first session will mainly involve discussing what topics in particular the students find difficult and finding out how they learn best and what works for them. During this session we will come up with a plan to achieve the set goals and then make a start. If the session is a one-off session then I will allow the student to tell me what they need help with and I will do what I can to assist. My tutoring style depends on the student.
If they are a visual learner, I will create flashcards and colourful diagrams, whereas if they are more of a practical learner then I will come up with activities which will help them learn and understand the topic. At certain intervals, I will give the students little tests/ quizzes to that I can see if they have been improving and it will give me a benchmark of what more work needs to be done.
I like to think I am a bubbly and positive person who will try my best to keep things interesting. For me the best way to encourage learning is to find a method in which the student connects with and understands. There is no better moment in teaching then when a student finally understands a concept that they had been finding difficult before!
We only take tutor applications from candidates who are studying at the UK’s leading universities. Candidates who fulfil our grade criteria then pass to the interview stage, where a member of the TiC team will personally assess them for subject knowledge, communication skills and general tutoring approach. About 1 in 10 becomes a tutor on our site.
