My name is Megan, and I am a third year medical student at Queens University Belfast. I am all about preparation and making sure you understand the key concepts that will be the building blocks to your understanding. When it comes to exams, confidence is key; my job is to instill my students with confidence as well a knowledge, so that when it comes to exam day, they remain cool, calm and collected.
When in school it can be overwhelming with the number of commitments you have to undertake with a range of GCSE and a level subjects all demanding your attention. When I was preparing for my GCSEs and A-levels I found that a revision timetable was great at helping me to strategise and plan my study accordingly. I also found using the specification to always ensure you understand each concept listed as this could be a potential exam question!!
Using practice exam questions is the best tool to test your knowledge once you have revised it thoroughly. I have always had a passion for education and throughout senior school I volunteered as a maths mentor with the junior students. In 2016, I travelled to India with a charity to teach children English in marginalised communities. I love helping others, and my key role is how to best help you or your child understand and adapt my learning style to this needs.
I always like to start with a free meeting to discuss with the student areas that they are struggling with, and identify the best strategy forward. Within this introductory 15 minutes I may utilise some Past paper questions to help gauge the level of understanding of the student.
I will structure each session by first going over the content of the topic to ensure all key concepts are understood to the level required for the specification if said subject. This will include uploaded notes on the topic which are exam Board specific and prepared in advance of the lesson. It is so important to allow the student to ask questions throughout the session, if they don’t follow or understand anything and then identify areas that need further study.
I find that practice exam questions or even quizzing students on their understanding is a beneficial way for me to understand what they do and don’t understand, as well ass help the student identity their own areas of strengths and weaknesses. In the final 15-25 minutes to each session I upload relevant practise exam questions from past papers to test the students understanding. The questions will be of varying difficulty and question style relevant to the exam board.I will measure progress over a number of sessions by giving practice exam questions to assess their knowledge and by watching their confidence grow as they begin to understand the concept.
