Hi I’m Ned, and I’m currently in my 4th year studying Chemistry at the University of Oxford (Pembroke college). The degree is tough and requires perfect understanding of underlying concepts which pin the ground work for all of Chemistry. This grasp of core theory enables me to scrutinize students well when identifying weaknesses and ensuring ideas are well comprehended, instead of simply memorised. For A levels I achieved 3 A*s, and for GCSE I achieved 9A*s and 1A. I also placed 2nd in the year for my Oxford 1st year Organic chemistry exam. I recently achieved an 84% average across my 3rd year Oxford Organic exams. I’m very willing to teach any Organic topics to University students. I will also teach first year Inorganic and Physical Chemistry. As well as teaching school topics, I can give practice interviews and exams for university applicants (Oxbridge + more). A few months ago I gave a student some practise interviews and papers who then successfully applied to Trinity College Cambridge to read Natural Sciences.
I teach with a focus on good understanding – I believe this is the best way to ace exams. Having only done A levels recently I am aware of all the common pitfalls which exams present to students. Online lessons will proceed similarly to face-to-face lessons, combining written and aural explanations for each concept. Chemistry is a subject where a student will benefit from tackling questions they may not be able to do at first, but with hints from the tutor, being able to gradually work their way through it. This kind of learning sticks more than simply copying/listening to a tutor. The approach is similar to the Oxford tutorial system. I can particularly help well with exam technique, and fundamental principles of maths/chemistry/physics which may be difficult to learn at first. If I don’t think my student has truly understood a concept, I will not move on until they’re completely confident. At the end of a topic I will ensure a student can teach me the content back without regurgitating words – not just rote learning. For college students I’m also able to help with UCAS applications, specifically for Oxbridge (writing personal statements, practice interviews, giving advice for higher reading, and teaching certain Chemistry first year university topics to supplement an interview).
We only take tutor applications from candidates who are studying at the UK’s leading universities. Candidates who fulfil our grade criteria then pass to the interview stage, where a member of the TiC team will personally assess them for subject knowledge, communication skills and general tutoring approach. About 1 in 10 becomes a tutor on our site.
