I graduated in 2017 in English from Cambridge, where I achieved a double First.
I studied a mixture of A-levels as I have always enjoyed both science and arts subjects, and completed an extended project on King Richard III. During my degree I worked on a broad range of literature and history, from Ancient Greece to the present day, with a special interest in the Victorians and the Tudors.
At the end of my GCSEs I almost dropped English, but chose to carry on to A-level at the last minute and went on to study at Cambridge after taking a year out after Year 13. I have a lot of empathy for anyone who doesn’t yet know what they want to do next! I’m a big fan of Shakespeare and I’m lucky enough to have been to see quite a few of his plays on stage, but I hope to encourage students who find his language difficult or struggle to put their thoughts into an essay.
I am now studying for an MA in literature and history from 1500-1700 at University College London.
For Year 9 and below, I am available to work on planning essays and creative writing, and talk through any set texts, comprehension exercises or sources for English and History.
For Latin, I would be happy to work on vocabulary and talk through exercises in the textbook if they can be provided in advance of the lesson. I think it’s important at this level to find your confidence in the subject, and I hope to encourage that in my students. For GCSE and A-level, I know how important exam technique is for arts subjects. I will make sure I’ve looked into the appropriate board if provided in advance so we can look at some practice questions, and I will be prepared to mark essays and translations and talk through plans and approaches to literary and source analysis. I’d like to keep an open dialogue, so that if you become aware of any particular tricky areas in the subject, we can plan a lesson around them. Before exams, we can arrange revision sessions to cover difficult topics and go over past papers.
We only take tutor applications from candidates who are studying at the UK’s leading universities. Candidates who fulfil our grade criteria then pass to the interview stage, where a member of the TiC team will personally assess them for subject knowledge, communication skills and general tutoring approach. About 1 in 10 becomes a tutor on our site.
