I am currently studying an MA in Intercultural Communication studies at Shanghai Theatre Academy, where I have taken several classes in Performing Arts Theory, Film History, and Intercultural Theatre.
I completed my undergraduate degree in Chinese at the University of Oxford in 2016. My undergraduate degree was a rich mixture of history, language, and philosophy. I wrote my dissertation on contemporary Chinese masculinity in popular culture. I specialise in critical thinking and academic writing, creative writing, history and humanities, particularly cultural studies. I have over five years of experience as a tutor, helping gain one student achieve an A* in GCSE Chinese and another achieve level 7 IELTS writing.
I am quite straightforward in my use of language, I get students to answer questions for themselves as much as possible, helping to guide their line of thinking. I try to ask questions creatively so that students understand problems from a new perspective and I also try to be humorous given my background in performing arts and comedy.
My lessons will be structured by allowing lots of time for the student to ask questions to help the learning process. I will also end every lesson with a useful task/question for the student to answer to help consolidate their understanding prior to the next lesson. I hope progress will become apparent, but I think regular mini tests are also important to ensure understanding and help show areas that can be improved upon. Allowing the student to go over material in their own time after the lesson I believe is key for them to develop a solid understanding of the subject.
We only take tutor applications from candidates who are studying at the UK’s leading universities. Candidates who fulfil our grade criteria then pass to the interview stage, where a member of the TiC team will personally assess them for subject knowledge, communication skills and general tutoring approach. About 1 in 10 becomes a tutor on our site.
