Loneliness at school
Many Hong Kong parents feel that they have succeeded in taking care of their children once they achieve a good place at university, especially if the uni is abroad. On the flipside, more universities have lifted the cap on student numbers thus allowing for an influx of a more diverse group of students. But as universities expand, the more isolated individuals can become. Recent studies have shown that loneliness adversely affects some university students, with ethnic minorities and the disabled especially at risk.
Before parents plan their child’s academic career away from home, it is important to equip them with the right skills to cope with such changes from a young age in order to protect and prepare their mental well-being. Leaving one’s family for a better life may sound ideal, but it may not always be what is best for a person.
