‘Heavy burden’ of homework leaving Chinese schoolchildren sleep-deprived, study finds

Chinese students are overwhelmed with homework, and it seems to be having a variety of negative effects, including sleep deprivation. Although this article focuses on research done in mainland China, our experience in HK suggest this problem is also very prevalent here.

The pressure to succeed academically and the pressure on schools and teachers to give homework may be putting an unreasonable burden on young children. What is needed is balance. Schools have a role to play here getting greater coordination among teachers to make sure the total amount of homework being given to young students is not excessive.
