Escaping Trauma : Self-medication and Adolescents
The Popular Netflix show 13 Reasons Why is now on its second season, and it touches on very real issues experienced by today’s adolescents, specifically triggered by a classmates’ suicide. By the time the average adolescent reaches adulthood, about 80% will have undergone a traumatic experience. Given the inaccessibility of support for many, adolescents are left to fend for themselves, thus resorting to escapist, destructive behavior such as alcohol and drug abuse. It is important for adults working with this highly vulnerable age group to know the signs and symptoms of trauma, and how to help adolescents. The ANUTGN and Australian government have come up with a detailed list to aid parents and teachers in identifying trauma among adolescents.
