Amazon sued over Alexa child recordings in US

In another worrying trend by one of the large tech companies, there has been a recent legal suit against Amazon for keeping track of children’s voice prints and using this data to build up vast amounts of detail on a child’s life. As children interact with “Alexa” it can build up a very detailed picture of a child’s likes and dislikes etc. — the implication being that this information can then be used for marketing purposes or sold to other companies.

Amazon is claiming the fears are unfounded and there are adequate data protection procedures in place.

The take away from this seems to be that parents should be very careful of what tech devices are being used by their children and be aware of what data is being kept. It would also seem that governments have a place in ensuring that children are not being left open for exploitation.

What do you think about this type of technology? Good or bad?
